We hear that word quite often. We ask our guests what enthralls them the most and it's never just one thing..."It's so charmingly beautiful"..."we feel as though we stepped back in time"..."the beds are divine-I could have slept all day"...one guest threatened to take the bed home on top of of her car. Others can't seem to leave the front porch, while some are captivated by the elegant decor.
Our Inn was built during the 1820's while Isaiah Robbins and his sons lived in the log cabin, which is now the Lillian Suite. The house and the store were completed in 1830 and became the epicenter of the property procured by Wm. Van Rensselaer in a grant from the East Indies Trading Company and the King of England. This storefront was the mercantile, hardware and supply center for the entire area and later added the post office and gas station for the area. The house was later purchased by the Palmer family in 1911 and remained in that family until Bert and I purchased the property in 2010..The house began its swift return to its glory the very next day.
Each part of the house and cottage has been restored back to the style and grandeur of the stately Georgian era....but with all the important modern day nuances....such as the fireplace that we returned to the parlor. It had been removed when the previous owner felt that steam was avant-garde. Friends, children, neighbors and of course our contractor, helped us bring the house back to its original beauty. It was a crazy, chaotic time but with their positive attitudes and help we managed to finish and open in 5 months. Notably, when the Palmer family descendants came to see the Inn finished, they told us the house felt 'Happy'.
Nowadays, mornings here at the Inn begin with gourmet breakfasts created by Holly, served with delicious coffee and fruit plates.....then off you go to spend your day in the foothills of the Catskills. Hike our country roads or head to the majestic mountains to climb the passes; fish the some of the finest trout streams in the state only feet from the front door! Head over to the farms and visit the Alpacas. We have babies (known as Cria)!! Say hi to the neighbors horses and goat. Go antiquing or shopping in town, or get wild and head over to the ranch and saddle up a horse for a ride. So much to do before a delicious dinner at one of our five, yes five, fantastic restaurants with chefs that could rock NYC. However, before you do, grab a rocker and watch the sun set behind those magical Catskill Mountains....pinks and purples you have never seen this way before...and you think to yourself ..."How enchanting...."
